The lineation and capitalization have been editorially supplied to match Clemens’s typical format for book inscriptions. The catalog indicates that the book is also “inscribed, Mark Twain, Jan. 21, 1909, inside the front cover,” suggesting that Clemens may have signed it again for Bartlett (1833–1914) nearly twenty-eight years after his first inscription.
