dear sir,

i sometimes write a miscellaneous article, but it is very seldom. when i do write one, i send it to my publisher, j. r. osgood, boston, who disposes of it as he pleases, and thus take[s] the business end of the thing off of my hands. as i have entered into a solemn engagement with him to this effect, and riveted the same with oaths and execrations, i am obliged to refer you to him.

very truly yours,
s. l. clemens.
