I clear forgot that ten dollars which Mrs. Whitmore lent Mrs. C. However, it has since been jammed into the Gilsey bill, & now she won’t ever see it any more. The bill came, in due time, ($67.70) of which sum, $20.10 was charged to you. As your room was only $4, I could not see why it was so large. They seemed to have got too much dinner charged to you. So I wrote & asked them to send me t all the dining-room orders, so that I could inspect for myself. They came—four of them for you, & five for me. I was exactly as wise as I was before. So I did not bother any more about it, but paid both bills and turned my great mind to less complicated matters. Your bill should have been about $10—so let’s let it stand at that; it just squares our account with Mrs. Whitmore, & leaves everything snug & smooth.

Enclosed is letter received from Mr. Watrous some time ago. Show it to Mr. Bennett & others—or tell them about it—& ask them to keep a strict eye on that conductor, & report him the very first time they catch him in an impoliteness to anybody. If they don’t want the disagreeable office of reporting him, ask them to give the facts to me, & I will gladly do the reporting.
