22? November 1884 • New York, N.Y. (MS, draft: CU-MARK, UCCL 03028)
(Copy.)
Confidential.
I have seen Coit, he agrees with me in favor of your friend. He has written to Barnard saying so. It is all right, & the commission will be given him. There are some details about statue that will require consultation.
⟦But Mr. W. ought to withdraw.⟧
7. I knew that Gov. Waller had publicly expressed his opinion, but I did not know, or had forgotten, that Mr. Coit had. But it appears he wrote his opinion to Mr. Coit & to Mr. Barnard. Yet Mr. Barnard calmly lets this new competition go on & new models be made, as if he didn’t know a decision had been reached.
A new competition is not in order, unless Mr. Waller & Mr. Coit refuse to ratify their former decision. Let us wait to hear from them, unless if Gov. Harrison shall not feel authorized to make the award upon this informal verdict.
