Explanatory Notes
1 

John Robert Drake (b. 1830), who worked for the Buffalo patent agency of Burke, Fraser, and Osgood, lived at 366 Delaware Avenue, two blocks from the Clemenses. Clemens’s next letter was to Drake’s brother (Buffalo Directory: 1870, 17, 342, 580; 1871, 322, 611; 1872, 266, 305; Samuel Gardner Drake).
