Livy darling, I suppose the best news I can write you is, that I am at this moment 50 cents ahead of the venerable Osgood. Yes, I paid him $9.50 last night, on s certain games of billiards; but this morning I won $1.50 on the same game; on the cars I won $5., at euchre; & to-night in Quebec I won $4 at billiards. What a power of interest & pleasure I have got out of 50 cents—& the 50 cents comes out of Osgood’s pocket, too, not mine.

I have received two letters from you, Livy darling, & they were a great pleasure to me. Thus far, I don’t like Quebec. The hotel is infernal. You couldn’t endure these beds. Everything in the hotel is of the date of Champlain, or even of Cartier, & thoroughly worn out. I don’t think any town has much interest to me unless the hotels are good. We came here to stay over Sunday—arrived 3 hours ago. Our present plan is to go back to Montreal tomorrow (Saturday) where we have business Monday.

Goodnight & lots of kisses.

Saml.
