Howells’s review ought to be “nuggeted,” (I mean, the most telling remarks mustered together,) so as to make 3 or 4 stickfuls of bourgeois, then printed on slips & supplied to every canvasser, so that he can supply the same to his village editor along with press copy of book. Langhorne (part of my own name)—& I want to simultane with Chatto & with the Australian Review. WhereverⒶemendation “Hartford” occurs (which is only once, I believe,) change it to “Boston.”

They can pay what they please—or nothing.

There is not a statement in the article which is either untrue or in the least degree exaggerated. Yet there isn’t one in it which would be believed, with my nom de plume at the bottom. WillⒶemendation you send it to the Century, or shall I?

Derned if I can think of anything to suggest except taking a set of plates to Canada to print from. If that will answer in place of setting up the book there, I should recommend that. TheyⒶemendation wouldn’t need to be electrotyped, but only stereotyped. And in any case, if we ain’t on hand there a week beforehand, the C. edition won’t be out on time., I judge.

You might as well use Dawson’s imprint & put the copyright entry & title in the name of his one of his some Montreal hotel clerk, if you know one. What’s the objection to that? There ain’t any, is there?
