Dear Sir:

I shall not attempt to “simultane” with any London magazine, as formerly, of course, since this article was disposed of to “Scribner’s” without any reservations of that sort; but it has occurred to me that possibly there might be no objection to my sending it to an Australian magazine in Melbourne. If there is any objection—even the slightest—I haven’t a word to say, for I don’t wish to sell a thing & then seem to be trying to borrow it back again. But otherwise, I would like to have a proof to send there; it couldn’t appear in print there before December or January—the latter, I judge. I have had that magazine on my conscience for two years, now. I have made about four promises to “simultane,” with it, but at the pregnant moment have always forgotten it, until this time.

I do not urge this matter, for I am not very strenuous about it. My conscience is not unaccustomed to loads; she is used to going down the river with her guards in the water, & this one little added package will hardly sink her.

Truly Yours
S. L. Clemens.
