Dear Mr. Norton—

Yes indeed, I will come, with pleasure, though I don’t mind telling you that Ashfield’s commercialemendation shrewdness doesn’t seem to me to be quite up to the H New England mark. The free scholarships should have been conferred upon Warner’s descendants. The credit would have been the same, & the expense nominal; whereas, as the thing stands now, she has done a pretty risky thing.

From August 7th till Sept. 15th, our tribe will be in Elmira, N. Y.; & as far as I can see there will be no choice in dates, as in my case. Any date you choose between now & the 10th September will suit me.

I shall [be] mighty glad to be the guest of yourself & Mr. Curtis.

Truly Yours
S. L. Clemens
