My Dear Howells:

We must apologize again for our shameless delay in getting out to lunch. If Mrs. Howells will forgive & forget, we will always be strictly on time henceforth.1explanatory note

Mrs. Clemens gets upon the verge of swearing & goes tearing around in an unseemly fury when I enlarge upon the delightful time we had in Boston & she not there to have her share. I think she will be mighty sure to be along when we go again. I have tried hard to reproduce Mrs. Howells to her, & have probably not made a shining success of it. Jo & I had so much to talk about that the train got here before we were expecting that event.
