Call at the Lafayette Hotel at 9 sharp, day after tomorrowⒶemendation (Friday) morning, & ask for J. B. Smith (of New York.) That will be me. If Keep my real name quiet. If nothing happens, I shall be there——otherwise I will send you some letters of introduction.
Enclosed is Falquerier’s letter—& a fine time M we have had hunting for it. Why it has not been burned, I cannot understand—for the original of a valuable letter ought never to be trusted in a second person’s hand; & when one is trusted to me I always burn it. You have several times sent things to me marked “Preserve This” —“Return This” &c. Don’t ever do that again—send me a copy of the thing—then when I lose it no harm is done.
