Books Published by the American Publishing Company

This catalog was bound in at the back of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It is reproduced from a copy of the book in the Mark Twain Papers, The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley (CU-MARK). All of the listed books were published between 1857 and 1878 by the American Publishing Company or in two cases—Squibs of California, or, Every-day Life Illustrated (the full title of that work) and My Captivity Among the Sioux—by its subsidiary, the Mutual Publishing Company. The titles “now nearly ready for the press,” Scripture Reading Lessons and India, were published in 1878 and 1877, respectively. The History of the Indian Races of the Western Continent has not been confirmed under that title, but was published as The Indian Races of North and South America in 1865 and again in 1873. The “Holiday Books,” listed somewhat elliptically, were Mary Kirby’s Stories About Birds of Land and Water, Thomas Jackson’s Stories About Animals, and Abby Sage’s Pebbles and Pearls for the Young Folks.
